Mona Lisa - Respect what you cook

Your weekly art takeaway

Aug 11 | Issue 03

ML - Welcome to Mona Lisa. A weekly newsletter for artists with timeless quotes, ideas and light bites for curious & wandering minds.

You have to be very respectful of that first contact...when you put it on a hot surface, the first thing that it will do is stick.. but slowly it will make this crusty layer and you will be able to move it without breaking it. I don't believe in flip and flopping food. You have to respect what you cook. 🍳

Little thoughts

✍️ One way to force yourself to slow down and think is to write. Good writing requires good thinking.

💓 The Mona Lisa has its own mailbox in the Louvre, where the painting receives mail and flowers from admirers.

🔵 “Blue has no dimensions. It is beyond dimensions”- Yves Klein. The allure of blue.

🍿 A movie that changes every time it is screened…the first generative feature film is here.

💭 If you had to chose between losing all your memories or not being able to make new ones, which would you chose?

Mona’s notes

Consistency is on my mind. I started this newsletter in a bid to commit to just one thing every single week. My plan hinged upon having subscribers - even just one sweet soul reading this every Sunday, would make me accountable to you.

Consistency isn't simply willpower, which comes and goes.

Consistency is doing it when you don't feel like doing it.

Arriving at issue 3 and so far so good, however I hit my first hurdle this week. I felt that the content was not ready to be released. Now this is a familiar feeling that I encounter with almost everything that I create: that it is not quite perfect has meant that much of my work remains unseen. I don’t regret keeping these darlings to myself, but I have noticed that it blocks the feedback loop that inevitably drives progress. No feedback means slower progress. 🐌

Art is never finished, only abandoned.

— Leonardo da Vinci

It’s a tough balance. This year I have been painting in a very ‘open’ studio with a steady flow of onlookers and visitors, sometimes feeling exposed or undercooked. But as the comments rolled in, almost daily, my work evolved and importantly, moved forward.

I could continue to caress and pamper this newsletter, but I am reminded of the law of diminishing returns - where after a certain point, any extra effort doesn’t bring the equivalent degree of improvement. So in honour of consistency, better out than in.

With love -
